The Lumbar Center
Non Surgical Options
We offer comprehensive non surgical treatment plans tailored to each patient's condition, focused on pain relief, mobility improvement, and overall spinal health. While we do not perform these treatments in house, we collaborate with trusted local specialists to ensure you receive the highest level of care.
Physical therapy
We develop personalized physical therapy prescriptions based on your specific needs and refer you to experienced local providers. These programs are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and posture, helping to reduce pain and enhance mobility while promoting long term spinal health.
Epidural injections
For patients who may benefit from epidural steroid injections, we provide expert evaluations and referrals to trusted local physicians who specialize in pain management. These injections can reduce inflammation and nerve related pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis, offering significant relief with minimal downtime.
Radiofrequency ablation
If radiofrequency ablation is a suitable option, we discuss its benefits and connect you with qualified local pain specialists for treatment. RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that can provide long lasting pain relief by targeting and disrupting pain signals from affected nerves, improving comfort and function without surgery.
Chiropractic care and acupuncture
Chiropractic care can help patients with leg pain as a component of their condition. Acupuncture works best in the presence of severe muscle spasms. Both are considered alongside physical therapy and medication as part of a comprehensive conservative plan.
When to consider surgery
Patients who present with any neurological deficit, such as foot drop or progressive leg weakness, are evaluated for surgery sooner than later. Patients with persistent and worsening symptoms beyond eight to twelve weeks of conservative care may also be candidates.

Patient questions
What should I know about non surgical options?
Candidates typically have persistent arm or leg symptoms, a matching abnormality on MRI, and limited improvement after structured non surgical care. Patients with progressive weakness or spinal cord compression may need earlier surgical evaluation.
A fusion joins two or more vertebrae so they heal into one solid unit, which stabilizes the segment but removes motion at that level. Motion preserving surgery, such as an artificial disc replacement, relieves the same nerve pressure while keeping natural movement. Fusion suits instability and certain causes of pain, while motion preservation suits selected patients with good alignment and mainly nerve related symptoms.
Often, yes. Most one level and two level procedures are performed on a same day basis, and patients go home the same day. A three level surgery, or a patient who lives far away or alone, may warrant an overnight stay. Your surgeon confirms the plan with you beforehand.
The clearest improvement is usually in the radiating arm or leg symptoms caused by a compressed nerve. Axial neck or back pain can improve too, though it may respond more gradually. Walking is the main activity for the first four weeks, and most patients return to everyday activity within weeks, with heavier work taking longer.
Bring any prior imaging such as MRI, CT, or x ray studies, ideally on a disc, along with the reports. Bring a current medication list, a short summary of your symptoms and what makes them better or worse, and a note of treatments you have already tried. Writing your questions down in advance, and bringing someone with you, makes the visit more useful.
